We can repair virtually any air conditioning model, and repair is often the right call. But some systems have reached the point where continued repairs cost more than a replacement would. Here are five signals that point toward replacement:

Consider replacing an air conditioning system that is:

• Beyond its expected lifespan: Most central air conditioning systems last about 15 to 20 years with proper maintenance. If yours is near or past that range, a new system can be more reliable and more efficient than keeping the old one running.
• Running on R-22 refrigerant: The EPA has fully phased out R-22 refrigerant production and import. Parts and refrigerant for these older systems are increasingly scarce and expensive, making continued service impractical for most homeowners.
• Cooling inconsistently: A properly functioning system keeps temperatures even throughout the home and controls indoor humidity. Uneven cooling or a loss of humidity control often means the unit can no longer meet the home’s demands.
• Breaking down repeatedly: Occasional repairs are normal. Frequent breakdowns are a sign the system has reached the end of its reliable service life.
